The power-sharing deal to be signed by Zimbabwe's political parties today should be hailed as a giant leap towards peace and prosperity in that country.

Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai should be lauded for reaching the settlement after weeks of intense negotiations chaired by President Thabo Mbeki.

We hope the deal will now pave the way for both leaders to bury the hatchet and work towards rebuilding the country.

A pat on the back for Mbeki, whose quiet diplomacy has turned out to be the best recipe for a settlement in Zimbabwe.

Major world powers should move swiftly to give the new government the much-needed aid during its reconstruction and development.
