Mokoape is leader of new BC party

Black Consciousness is the single most revolutionary philosophy that has arisen in the past 40 years, more than 2000 delegates were told by Dr Nchaupe Mokoape shortly after his election as president of the Black Consciousness Political Party (BCPP) yesterday.

Black Consciousness is the single most revolutionary philosophy that has arisen in the past 40 years, more than 2000 delegates were told by Dr Nchaupe Mokoape shortly after his election as president of the Black Consciousness Political Party (BCPP) yesterday.

Speaking at the launch of the BCP at the Tshwane University of Technology, Mokoape said: "BC laid the foundation for the freedom that we have in this country. While 1994 was an important landmark in our lifetime, it does not equal liberation. Democracy cannot imply death, landlessness, homelessness, poverty and disease."

The launch of the BCPP was the culmination of months of delicate behind-the-scenes talks between the Azanian People's Organisation, the Socialist Party of Azania and the Black People's Convention.

The 60-year-old Mokoape is a founder member of the Black People's Convention and the SA Students' Organisation. He was also among the accused in the "Saso Trial" of the 1970s.

Other office bearers are: Professor Ben Khoapa, national chairman; Nkosi Molala, deputy president; Dan Habedi, secretary-general; Kedibone Molema, publicity secretary; Azwi Toshitangano, national organiser, and Thabo Ndabeni as deputy. - Ido Lekota
