National Heritage Council chief executive Sonwabile Mangcotywa said his organisation commended former ANC Youth League leader Fikile Mbalula for going for traditional circumcision.

The issue was condemned by Xhosa traditionalists who said Mbalula delayed the process too long.

On Tuesday Sowetan reported that Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa president Patekile Holomisa was surprised that Mbalula was not circumcised.

Holomisa was surprised that Mbalula was still an inkwenkwe (an uncircumcised boy).

But Mangcotywa praised Mbalula. He said: "What Mbalula did is commendable. We hail his decision to trace his heritage. It's part and parcel of decolonising our heritage. He should be allowed to identify himself with the cultural practices of his ancestors and should be supported."
