The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is this week celebrating its victory in a by-election in the Mkhambathini municipality in the Midlands.

The party contested the ward with the IFP and the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) following the death of deputy mayor Johnson Sihlangu Mkhize.

Mkhize was murdered at Ngilanyoni, near Illovo, in June.

The ANC received a massive 1383 votes against the IFP's 613 and Nadeco's 30.

ANC provincial deputy secretary Sihle Zikalala said the IFP was continuing on its downward spiral.

"We retained the Mkhambithini municipality by overwhelmingly trouncing the IFP which had tried on a several occasions to oust the ANC by colluding with the DA," Zikalala said.

"The ANC is also happy that the people of KwaZulu-Natal have understood its message and will support it to ensure majority victory in next year's [national] elections."
