Minister of Sport Makhenkesi Stofile will be the guest of honour at the Butityi Konki Schools Rugby tournament semifinals at Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobuhle, Eastern Cape, on Friday.

The invitation to the minister was yesterday confirmed by Fumanikile Yamile, tournament organising secretary.

The tournament kicked off in April this year and is hosted by the KwaNobuhle Schools Rugby Union.

It has been been divided into three categories - high and primary schools.

Yamile said they had also invited officials from the Eastern Province Rugby Union and Port Elizabeth department of sport and businessman Butityi Konki.

Konki, a former rugby player in his heyday, donated R300 000 towards the development of rugby at school level.

In the first semifinal, Molly Blackburn High School come up against Sisonke at 2pm and Mahlangu take on Thanduxolo at 3.15pm.

The semifinals of the primary schools were held last Friday with Mqayi and Stephen Nkomo (seniors) and Mjuleni and Mgcunube (juniors) emerging winners and advancing to the finals set for October 17.

Mqayi and Nkomo routed Hombakazi and Mthonjeni 8-0 and 13-0, respectively while Mjuleni eclipsed Ntungwana 3-0 and Mgcunube overpowered Alex Jayiya 10-0.

"We are inviting all parents and rugby enthusiasts to come in large numbers to support the tournament," said Yamile.
