Former Bafana Bafana player Cyril Nzama pushed, choked and kicked his wife after booting her out of their bedroom, the Johannesburg magistrate's court heard yesterday.
Nonhlanhla Nzama, 34, told the court that their marriage was already on the rocks long before June 17, the day of the alleged assault.
She said the assault only stopped when their five-year-old daughter knocked at the door after hearing her scream.
"We started sleeping in separate bedrooms after the Easter holiday," she said.
She also told the court that a few days before the assault Nzama had taken her cellphone and car keys because "he was not happy with my night trips".
Cyril Nzama, 34, has pleaded guilty to charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm relating to the incident at their Naturena home.
In his plea statement, read by his counsel Blessing Nhlapo, Nzama admitted pushing his wife.
Nonhlanhla told the court that she went to the bedroom they had previously shared in the morning to fetch her clothes and cosmetics but the door was locked.
Nzama only opened the door when it was time for him to take the children to school.
She told the court that after she had taken her clothes, Nzama grabbed them and threw them outside.
"He pushed me and I fell. He then choked me, which was when I bit his finger to get him to release me," she said.
But Nonhlanhla repeatedly said she could not remember how many times she was kicked, pushed and beaten in the face.
"Everything happened so quickly during the assault and I was not counting."
Magistrate Norman Makhubela postponed the case to November 4 to enable the doctor who examined Nonhlanhla Nzama to testify.
