Globally governments battle to juggle scant resources to meet their ever-bourgeoning priorities.

So they are forced to routinely prioritise their spending to be able to meet their mandate.

Given these constraints, it is rather disturbing that corruption within and outside government ranks continues to spirit off the scant resources meant for the improvement of the lives of the poor.

It is good news that the Department of Social Development, with the help of a special investigating unit, has removed more than 330 000 fraudulent social grant beneficiaries from its database.

This positive development should enable the government to redirect funds to more deserving causes.
