A taxi passenger was killed in a road rage incident in Durban - barely a week after a motorist was shot in a similar incident - KwaZulu-Natal police said yesterday .

Captain Bongani Khomo said a passenger in a minibus was shot dead when an argument erupted between its driver and that of a bakkie it collided with in Fourth Avenue, Claremont, on Sunday night.

"It is alleged that the bakkie driver opened fire and a passenger was killed," Khomo said. "The minibus driver was also wounded and is in hospital."

The driver of the bakkie was later arrested and will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court soon.

He told the police that minutes after the collision the occupants of the minibus alighted and attacked him and that he opened fire in selfdefence.

Motorist Michael Mbonambi, 33, died in a similar incident in the KwaDabeka area on September 2.

At the time, Khomo said, Mbonambi was in his vehicle when another vehicle, moving in the opposite direction, took up space on his side of the road, leaving little space for him to pass. They stopped and started arguing through the open windows of their vehicles.

"The driver of the one vehicle reversed, made a U-turn and parked parallel to Mbonambi's vehicle," Khomo said. He drew a firearm and opened fire."

Mbonambi was shot in the head and died on the scene. The police were summoned and made two arrests. Cases of murder are pending against the two accused. - Sapa
