Statistics released by the Premier Soccer League yesterday showed that one red and 24 yellow cards were flashed during the opening league matches of the National First Division (NFD) two weeks ago.

New babies in the Coastal Stream, Carara Kicks, are top of the table with four yellow cards, followed by Mpumalanga Black Aces with three yellow and one red. Two players each from Black Leopards, FC Cape Town, Durban Stars, Jomo Cosmos, Vasco da Gama and Winners Park were yellow carded.

In the Inland Stream, it is said to be the toughest. Only eight goals were scored in the opening four matches, compared to 16 in the Coastal Stream after the same number of outings.

Meanwhile, Ali Akan, FC AK's mentor, believes his side is strong enough to win the NFD's Inland Stream. Part of this is down to the fact that Bahumi qualified for the playoffs in the past two seasons.

"We have assembled a stronger and competitive team this season that gives me confidence that we will have a freeway to the lucrative Absa Premiership. Our target this season is to gain promotion by winning the automatic promotion playoffs," Akan said yesterday.
