A patient has allegedly been raped on the premises of a hospital - but so far the rapist has not been arrested.

The incident allegedly happened at the Jane Furse Hospital in the early hours of Friday morning.

The attack again puts the spotlight on safety arrangements at health institutions in the province.

Sources said the 18-year-old victim was admitted to the hospital a few days before the incident.

She had allegedly drunk poison in an effort to take her own life after a quarrel with her mother.

The victim comes from Ngwanamatlang village, near Jane Furse.

A source in the area said yesterday that the girl had been under a lot of stress as a result of the ordeal. He said the perpetrator might have taken advantage of her condition to force himself on her.

Though he was cagey about it, the source insinuated that a male nurse at the institution was suspected of the crime.

"To start with, when she was admitted the victim shared a ward with other patients, he said.

"But surprisingly she was taken to a private room where she was alone. And equally surprising, the person we suspect has not been reporting for work since then."

He claimed the nurse had allegedly expressed an interest in the patient the first time she was admitted.

Provincial police Spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba confirmed they were investigating the rape of a patient at the hospital.

Provincial department of health spokesman Phuti Seloba confirmed yesterday that a patient was raped at their institution and that the matter was now in the hands of the police.

Earlier this year, a nurse was raped at the Sekororo Hospital outside Tzaneen.
