A 14-year-old pupil is in critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed three times by a classmate while on the way home from school yesterday.

The incident happened at corner Commissioner and Grace streets in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Percy Morokane said the victim was stabbed in the back. He tried to get away but the attacker continued to stab him on the neck and head with a pair of scissors.

He said that the boys had been arguing the whole day while at school. "The boy was bleeding profusely on the head. A motorist who was passing by noticed the incident and intervened.

"He took him to Fairview Fire Station where he was stabilised," said Morokane.

Both boys attend Troyville Primary School.

The victim's family, shocked by the stabbing, gathered yesterday at his bedside in the Johannesburg General Hospital.

His uncle, Bongani Malinga, said they were planning to meet with the parents of the stabber to try and work out a way forward.

"The family is shocked by the incident, our son is seriously hurt, especially on the head.

"We are going to arrange a meeting with the parents of the stabber, hopeful by tomorrow," Malinga said.

In the past month alone in Gauteng, school playground violence had resulted in several stabbings between pupils.

A 16-year-old high school pupil stabbed another on the left arm with a knife during a fight at Hoer Volkskool in Heidelberg.

In Krugersdorp in the West Rand, Morne Harmse is alleged to have killed schoolmate Jaques Pretorius, using a ninja sword.

In Pretoria, a 15-year-old pupil was found to be in possession of a firearm while in a taxi in Wonderboompoort. School authorities told the police the pupil was travelling between schools in the area carrying the firearm.
