Residents of Limpopo's GaKgapane township, near Modjadjiskloof, have been without water since early last month owing to poor water reticulation.
The residents say they cannot make use of the toilets in their homes and have been forced to relieve themselves in the veld or in the bushes.
Areas that are most affected include Mountain View, Mesopotamia, Mapolankeng and Tshamahansi.
They say water is only available at the Bolobedu police station and other up-market sections of the township.
Many residents have to walk for about two kilometres to get water from the police station, while those who work in Tzaneen and Modjadjiskloof have to carry water in containers from the towns.
Residents say the Greater Letaba municipality has been informed about the problem but has failed to deal with it.
According to a resident five members of his family have to share water from a 25 litre container each day to bath.
"We are living in a hazardous situation because of the stench from the toilets," he said.
Municipality spokesman Vyida Rakubu says the problem is not the municipalities responsibility but that of Lepelle Northern Water, a water delivery utility for the area.
