Zimbabwean athletes dominated the Blue IQ City to City 50km ultra-marathon from Pretoria to Johannesburg yesterday in both the men and women's categories.

In the men's section, Mr Price runner Portipher Dombojena walked away with a whopping R250000 first prize in 2 hours 54 seconds and 15 seconds. An exhausted Dombejena said he was eyeing the gruelling upcoming Nedbank Soweto Marathon on November 2.

He was followed by his countrymen and teammates Hatiwande Nyamande and Sipho Ncube, who clocked in 2.55:54 and 2:56:18 respectively.

Samukellisa Moyo, 34, also from Zimbabwe, pocketed R250000 after easily scooping the women's category in a time of 3:28:10. She broke away from the rest of a big field after the 31km mark and never looked back until the finishing point in Newtown.

She was followed by South Africans Riana van Niekerk, who came second in 3:30.59, while third place was grabbed by Farwa Mentoor in 3:33:10.

Another Zimbabwean, Sharon Tavengwa, won the half-marathon race in the women's division by clocking 1:18:38. She was followed by Irvette Blerk in 1:18:48 and third position went to Taemo Wildegebrief in 1:21:58.

In the men's section, Ethopian Mehari Braki stole the limelight when he registered a close win in 1:08.18. Second-placed Elmore Sibanda came 21 seconds later after the winner (1:08:39) while Johny Negemy was content with third spot in 1:09:16.
