Hundreds of mourners paid their last respects to businessman Oscar Dhlomo in Umbumbulu on the KwaZuluNatal South Coast on Saturday.

Dhlomo, 64, a former general secretary of the Inkatha Freedom Party, died last Friday following a respiratory illness.

Speaker after speaker heaped praise on Dhlomo, who was described as an astute businessman, at a service held at the Isaac Dhlomo Chapel.

Dhlomo left politics in 1990 to pursue business interests after serving as provincial minister of education and culture in the former KwaZulu bantustan government.

In 1991 he founded the Institute for Multiparty Democracy, a voter education and political research organisation.

He is survived by his wife Nokukhanya, two sons, Lwazi and Mfundo and daughter Khanyi, a former editor of True Lovemagazine. - Sunday Times
