South Africans cannot be faulted for thinking that Bafana Bafana will be the laughing stock come the 2010 World Cup finals.

South Africans cannot be faulted for thinking that Bafana Bafana will be the laughing stock come the 2010 World Cup finals.

This is after the South African senior national soccer side failed to qualify for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola.

It was clear from the outset that Bafana Bafana were heading for a disaster when Carlos Alberto Parreira resigned as coach, citing his wife's ill health.

When Parreira recommended that his compatriot, Joel Santana replace him, many South Africans were not convinced that he was the right man to lead us.

They are now vindicated since Santana has guided Bafana Bafana in five qualifying games, losing three, winning one and drawing one.

That is not good enough for a country that will be hosting the World Cup in two years' time. Heads must roll.

In soccer the most important thing is to win. Santana insults us by telling us that he is happy after we failed to qualify for the Afcon.

Maybe Santana should be reminded that the Afcon is the biggest soccer showpiece on the continent.

The Safa top brass owes the nation an apology.

Santana must thank his lucky stars he still has a job. He would have been fired on Saturday night had he coached one of the superpowers such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Tunisia.
