Schoeman breaks the 50m freestyle world record

SA's top swimmer Roland Schoeman put up a brilliant performance to break the World record in the 50m freestyle in 20.64 seconds on Saturday.

The previous record was 20.82. He was competing in the Telkom SA Short Course Championships that started on Thursday and ended yesterday at Delville Swimming Pool in Germiston.

Schoeman had on Friday bettered his own African record of 20.98 to a new standing of 20.82 in the 50m butterfly.

On the same day, he also broke the continental record (22.84) by clocking 22.74 in the 50m butterfly.

Afterwards he said he was looking forward to the Fina Swimming World Cup in Durban on October 17.

Full results: 50m freestyle - Schoeman (20.64): 50m butterfly - Schoeman (23.45); 100m breaststroke - W Diering; 100m individual medley - SRousseau (54.57); 400m freestyle - R Schoeman (3:50.49); 800m free style relay - Vineyard (7:52.45).

Women: Freestyle - C van Wyk (25.84); 50m backstroke - C van Wyk (28.00); 100m individual medley - M Loots (1:02:27); 800m freestyle: K Meaklim (8;57.63); 400m freestyle relay.

Mixed Multi Disability: Men: 100m breaststroke - Groenewald (1:14.02); 100m butterfly - C Groenewald (1:02.65).

Women: 100m breaststroke - D Makgakga (2:11.98).
