Police union threatens court action

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) threatened yesterday to go to court to try and stop police from going ahead with a "massive" restructuring plan which includes police officers re-applying for their positions.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) threatened yesterday to go to court to try and stop police from going ahead with a "massive" restructuring plan which includes police officers re-applying for their positions.

Popcru said it would launch a court application next week.

General secretary Abbey Witbooi said when they agreed to the restructuring plan, it was because it would have affected staff in area offices.

Meanwhile, a campaign of fear caused by police recruits with criminal records has lead Popcru to request a review of the recruitment policy for police reservists.

Witbooi said Johannesburg police station got a lot of bad publicity with police chasing after prostitutes.

"Those are not police. They are reservists. But because reservists are wearing blue uniforms, the public does not distinguish." -Sapa
