The June 16 Foundation held its first yearly general meeting at the weekend in Booysens, southern Johannesburg.

The foundation's Seth Mazibuko said the AGM was aimed at examining the proposed growth and development strategy and to also look at the contribution of the foundation, particularly in reshaping educational values, communities and the lives of the youth.

Guest speaker Siza Njingelane said: "Children in Cuba visit a museum as part of their curriculum. That is why everyone is exposed to the 1959 revolution.

"We gained democracy in 1994 but have already forgotten about the struggle. Any country that forgets its history will not have a future."

The foundation has adopted the Eight Schools Project to ensure that Soweto schools that took part in the June 16 1976 uprising benefit.
