Limpopo police have arrested a 25-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of a senior education official, whose body and car were found separately outside Louis Trichardt last week.

Police spokesman Captain Maano Sadike said the suspect was arrested at Kutama village, a few kilometres from Louis Trichardt, after the police acted on a tip from community members.

Jonathan Mbulaheni, 43, went missing on Sunday after he left home in his maroon Opel Corsa.

His body was found by farm workers in the bushes near a railway line at Ledig, about 20km from where his car was found.

Police suspect that Mbulaheni might have been hijacked because his car was found abandoned in Madabani village in the Tshilwavhusiku area.

At the time of his death Mbulaheni worked for the department of education in the Malamulele area but lived in Louis Trichardt.

He was found with gunshot wounds in the right armpit and buttocks.

"We are quite confident that we have arrested the right suspect," adike said.

"But police investigations are continuing to try and establish whether or not there might be more suspects linked to the incident."
