KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Bheki Cele has urged provincial police commissioner Hamilton Ngidi to look deeper into allegations that Superintendent Zethembe Chonco was sold out by his colleagues.

Cele said he was concerned about the allegations that Chonco was sold out to criminals.

"This allegation is worrying and we need to do something soon to clear the name of the police," said Cele.

He said the police have a responsibility to protect the citizens of the country from thugs.

Cele said he was "tired" of losing police members at the hands of thugs.

He added that he was pleased one man linked to the killing of Superintendent Frans Bothma was arrested in KwaMashu. A 33-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday.

Bothma was gunned down when he and two colleagues stopped to search a vehicle in KwaMashu's K Section last Tuesday.
