Drowning in the Nandoni Dam has prompted Limpopo legislature speaker Tshenuwani Farisani to call for tighter security around the "death traps".

Police were too scared to dive into the dam last week when a boat capsized with Walter Mungungoni in it, and family members had to wait a week for the body to wash up onto the bank.

The cops refused to dive in a search for the body because they said they feared crocodiles would eat them. A senior officer said cops would not risk their lives. They would wait for the body to wash up.

But residents in the area believe that police were reluctant to search for Mungungoni's body because of his financial status.

They claimed police acted quickly and recovered the bodies of three businessmen who drowned previously in the same dam.

Farisani said he was not impressed with the way in which police and the dam's authorities had handled the Mungungoni case.

"The circumstances surrounding the matter involving Mungungoni tells us that more needs to be done to address the situation.

"Laws should be put in place for better security at the dams," said Farisani.

Mungungoni drowned on Sunday last week and his body was recovered on Friday after five days of frantic searching. Mulalo Nemabaka, who was in the boat with Mungungoni, drowned too and his body was recovered the same day.
