Two cabinet ministers and senior members of the SA Communist Party (SACP) will be hauled before the party to account for their alleged involvement in a plot to smear fellow communist Blade Nzimande.

Intelligence Minister Ronnie Kasrils and Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula are alleged to have promised to squash a case against businessman Charles Modise if he implicated SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande .

"Both Kasrils and Nqakula will be given a chance to explain these allegations, SACP spokesman Malesela Maleka said. "It is disturbing that they have been mentioned."

Nzimande has been accused by former Cosatu leader Willie Madisha of receiving a R500 000 gift from Modise.

Modise, who is facing a charge of fraud, is said to have been persuaded by Willy Madisha and former SACP treasurer Philip Dexter to implicate Nzimande in exchange for amnesty.

Dexter is said to have acted on the instructions of Nqakula and Kasrils. Dexter allegedly deposited funds into a legal firm engaged by Modise to defend him in the fraud case.

Nqakula's spokesman, Hangwani Mulaudzi, said Modise's allegations would be left to the court to prove.

Kasrils' spokesman Lorna Daniels said the allegations were "a blatant lie".
