South African swimming stars will converge at Delville swimming pool in Germiston today to compete in the Telkom SA Short Course Championships.

Those athletes who were at the Beijing Olympics would obviously like to put their dismal performance behind them and concentrate on the local event in a move to better their previous records.

Athletes across the country are expected to come in large numbers because the event will afford them a great opportunity to prepare for the Fina Swimming World Cup in Durban from October 17-19.

Godfrey Moneni, Swimming South Africa marketing coordinator, said: "We are also expecting the up-and-coming youngsters at the event to learn more tricks from the local world-class swimmers.

"We hope new records will be set in different styles as everybody will be eager to get medals."

He also confirmed that Thabang Moeketsane, who had a bout of flu at the weekend, has registered for the competition.

Gerdhard Zandberg, ranked seventh in the 50m backstroke and 18th in the 100m backstroke on the world short course rankings, is expected to steal the show.

Other top swimmers who will strive for fast times in the freestyle events include the likes of Ryk Neethling and Darian Townsend.
