Speedsters under fire

Speedsters who ignore measures to get them to slow down on public roads might soon lose their licences.

Speedsters who ignore measures to get them to slow down on public roads might soon lose their licences.

The National Road Traffic Amendment Bill allows the courts to suspend the licences of drivers caught driving more than 30kmh above the speed limit in an urban area or more than 40kmh above the limit on freeways.

The Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act has already been piloted in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

The drivers start with zero points and then get penalised by one point for every offence committed.

Once a driver has accumulated 12 points the licence will be suspended for three months, and cancelled after it has been suspended for a third time. - Anna Majavu
