MPs to vote on Scorpions

Members of parliament who were investigated by the Scorpions for their part in the R24million Travelgate scandal in 2004 will be allowed to be referees and players by voting on the new laws legalising the dissolution of the crime-busting unit.

Members of parliament who were investigated by the Scorpions for their part in the R24million Travelgate scandal in 2004 will be allowed to be referees and players by voting on the new laws legalising the dissolution of the crime-busting unit.

Yesterday the ANC shot down a call by opposition parties that the 13 MPs still facing disciplinary charges for defrauding parliament be recused from voting on the legislation.

The laws in question are the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill and the South African Police Service Amendment Bill.

The laws make provision for the disbandment of the Scorpions and the formation of a new specialised crime unit under the South African Police Service. - Anna Majavu
