World-acclaimed muso, composer and dancer, Busi Mhlongo, has commended the government for its "support and love" for people battling with cancer.

Speaking at the Gauteng department of health's special banquet in honour of women who had battled breast cancer, held at the Helen Joseph Hospital, Mhlongo said she had received all her treatment for breast cancer at government hospitals.

"Through my long battle with cancer, I found myself surrounded by love and support from people. I'm happier now even though I'm living without a breast. I'm happy," she told guests.

"In these [public] hospitals I found love and support from staff who took care of every patient that was in the cancer ward.

"I received medication that people at private hospitals are using," she added.

Head of the Helen Joseph Breast Cancer Clinic, Carol Benn, said it could not be overemphasised that women needed to examine themselves during the first day of their period.

"Partners and spouses need to alert their partners of any physical changes and encourage them to seek help. Everyone should be an ambassador for breast cancer awareness," Benn said.

Hospitals performing mammograms in Gauteng are Helen Joseph, Johannesburg General, Chris Hani- Baragwanath, Pretoria Academy and Dr George Mukhari in GaRankuwa. Plans are under way to expand these services to the West Rand, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng.
