A senior education official in Limpopo has been found dead near a railway line not far from Louis Trichardt.

Jonathan Mbulaheni, 43, who lived in Louis Trichardt, was found dead on Tuesday.

He allegedly went missing on Sunday after he left home in his maroon Opel Corsa.

Police suspect that Mbulaheni might have been hijacked because his car was found abandoned in Madabani village in the Tshilwavhusiku area.

Mbulaheni's body was found near a railway line at Ledig, which is about 20 kilometres from where his vehicle was abandoned.

The body was found in the bushes after police were contacted by farmworkers.

Police spokesman Captain Maano Sadike said the deceased's body had gunshot wounds in the right armpit and buttocks.

"We suspect the motive for the killing might be related to armed robbery," Sadike said. "The way the deceased was shot shows that there was a struggle between him and his assailants."

According to Sadike, Mbulaheni worked in the Malamulele area and lived in Louis Trichardt.

Mbulaheni was allegedly driving home when he was confronted by armed men, Sadike said.

Sadike appealed to anyone who might have any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects to please alert the local police or to contact Inspector Tshikotshi on 082-319-9638.

Sadike said the police were investigating a case of murder.
