Rustenburg police in North West have strongly advised the public to prevent fraud by not parting with their bank cards at any time.
Thugs mainly prey on unsuspecting card holders during transactions at ATMs and the Rustenburg area has become a target, the local police said.
More than 200 cases involving "skimmed" or cloned bank cards were reported to Rustenburg police stations since January, with an additional 45 ATM fraud cases reported to the Potchefstroom commercial branch at the weekend.
Captain Elsabe Augoustides of the Rustenburg police said the situation was escalating and they were appealing to the public to be on the alert and to report any suspicious behaviour at ATMs or stores.
Mineworkers in particular have been warned to be highly cautious when using ATMs in desolate areas.
"They should not seek assistance from strangers at ATMs, except bank officials."
Augoustides urged card users to be on the alert and report any suspicious behaviour to the police on (014) 590-4119 or Crime Stop 08600 10111 at all hours.
