Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni tried yesterday to end speculation as to whether he will stay on for another five-year term. Addressing journalists in Pretoria, Mboweni stressed that the South African Reserve Bank Act identified the President as the person with the authority to appoint the governor. Mboweni said the Act was "silent" on the number of terms that a governor may serve. "My own position is that I have been governor of the Bank since August 1999 and I will complete my term in August 2009. If asked to serve, I will," he said. - Tamlyn Stewart
