This is despite a decision by the Local Organising Committee to withdraw the faci- lity from next year's Confe- derations Cup.
In withdrawing the Nelson Mandela Bay Sports Complex in Port Elizabeth, the LOC board said the builders would not meet the deadline, with the roof still a major challenge.
That being the case, the first batch of roof girders for the R1,5billion stadium arrived at Port Elizabeth Harbour last week from Kuwait and were due to be placed immediately.
Bicks Ndoni, the muni- cipality's deputy mayor, said: "We are getting ready, there is tremendous progress in the various fields. The first 20000 seats have already been delivered.
"We are confident that we will still deliver the stadium by March 2009. It will be a world-class stadium that everybody in South African will be proud of.
"We have decided not to dwell much on the construction of the stadium, there are other community projects that we are working on."
Ndoni was a vocal opponent of withdrawing the stadium from the Confederations Cup, saying they would go to the extent of approaching Fifa president Sepp Blatter. They are hoping the LOC will review their decision .
He also said they were delighted that Port Elizabeth outfit Bay United have gained promotion to the Premiership.
