'Malema is poking his nose in our affairs'

The ANC Youth League in Limpopo has come out with guns blazing at the league's national president, Julius Malema.

They accused him of interfering in provincial affairs despite the fact that he was serving in the national office.

Malema was elected president of the league in April this year.

Before that he was provincial secretary of the league in Limpopo.

At the centre of the row are allegations that Malema imposed his long-time friend as the league's provincial deputy secretary.

Jacob Lebogo, who was recently elected league secretary in the Capricorn region, should succeed Goodman Mitileni.

Mitileni is tipped to take over from Malema as provincial secretary, the position in which he had been acting since Malema assumed national responsibility.

The league's provincial chairman. Lehlogonolo Masoga, said yesterday the league was surprised that Malema was allegedly poking his nose in the affairs of the provincial structure.

"We are taking decisions based on the wishes of our membership and not on instructions from an individual," Masoga said yesterday.

"Malema is our national president and, therefore, has no business in interfering in our affairs as a province," he said.

He said a provincial working committee meeting was scheduled for tomorrow where a decision would be taken on the exact date for the provincial general council.

The council, he said, would decide on who becomes deputy secretary.

Masoga poured cold water on Malema's alleged interference, saying there had never been any bad blood between the provincial leadership and Malema.

He said the latest developments came as a complete surprise to them.

ANCYL national spokesman Floyd Shivambu said they were not aware of any interference by their president.

He said the leadership issues in Limpopo should be dealt with by the provincial leadership and not the league's national office.

But he acknowledged that Malema was a member of an ANCYL branch in Limpopo and was likely to have an interest in the leadership in the province.
