In a major breakthrough the ANC's provincial executive committee (PEC) has agreed to put the controversial renaming of Mangosuthu highway on hold.
The renaming is the prerogative of the ANC eThekwini region.
At the PEC meeting held at Amajuba on Monday the party agreed to hold back the process of renaming Umlazi's highway in honour of ANC stalwart Griffiths Mxenge.
They said they were doing this for the sake of "peace".
The IFP has been vehemently opposed to the name changes in general, with some senior party leaders threatening violence.
Yesterday the ANC's provincial secretary, Senzo Mchunu, said his party's relationship with the IFP was stable and they were committed to further improve relations to "ensure peace in the province".
"We agreed to put on hold the process of renaming the Umlazi highway, pending further discussions with the IFP," Mchunu said.
He agreed that the renaming of Mangosuthu highway had created a lot of hype.
"We also received numerous calls from people expressing concern about the instability between the parties," he said.
The IFP and Democratic Alliance last week filed court papers to review the street renaming process.
The IFP leader in the eThekwini municipality, Thembi Nzuza, said the ANC move was nothing to write home about .
"We don't know why they did not drop it altogether," Nzuza said.
"We had a round table discussion with the ANC on this issue but they told us nothing. Instead they communicated the matter through the media.
"But there is a sigh of relief now that the ANC is listening."
Political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu said the ANC move was a step in the right direction.
"It appears that the leaders in the municipality are more radical on the issue," Ndlovu said.
"But the fact that the ANC's PEC shows that the party is willing to talk might be seen as electioneering."
Meanwhile, the municipality has been installing new street name signs in greater Durban, except Mangosuthu highway.
