Self-esteem is a major key to success in life.

Self-esteem is a major key to success in life.

The development of a positive self-concept or healthy self-esteem is important to the happiness and success of children and teenagers.

Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves, and our behaviour clearly reflects those feelings. For example, a child or teen with high self-esteem will be able to:

l Act independently;

l Assume responsibility;

l Take pride in his/her accomplishments;

l Tolerate frustration; and

l Attempt new tasks and challenges.

On the other hand, a child with low self-esteem will:

l Avoid trying new things;

l Feel unloved and unwanted;

l Blame others for his own shortcomings; and

l Feel, or pretend to feel, emotionally indifferent.
