The IFP in KwaZulu-Natal has lashed out at the ANC-led Msunduzi municipality in Pietermaritzburg for awarding a R250000 tender to a company owned by the controversial former head of the department of agriculture, Jabulani Mjwara.
The tender was for organising a Women's Day concert, which flopped.
Only 300 people turned up at the concert, while the organisers had expected more than 15000 fans.
The IFP called on local government MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu to conduct an urgent investigation into how Ibhubesi Enterprises had got the nod to host the concert.
Ibhubesi Enterprises is a company jointly owned by Mjwara and his former secretary, Nontokozo Mathonsi.
Mjwara resigned from the department amid allegations of poor management after R100million could not be accounted for.
He resigned days before a forensic investigation was completed.
"The voters of KwaZulu-Natal should see the ANC for what they really are - a party which abuses the hard-earned taxes of the poorest with impunity in order to support and benefit ANC-aligned individuals regardless of their questionable records. No municipality worth its salt would have the temerity to sponsor Mjwara against the background of allegations which he did not have the courage to face in the department of agriculture," said the IFP's Joshua Mazibuko.
"What adds insult to injury is that the said concert became a failure, with about 300 of the 15000 projected people turning up."
Mazibuko said they believed that Mjwara must pay back the money.
"As the IFP, we demand that Mjwara must be made to pay back the whole R250000.
"Secondly, MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu must conduct an urgent investigation on this farce and communicate his findings publicly," he said.
Evodia Mahlangu, spokesman for the Msunduzi municipality, asked Sowetan to send her questions when she was asked to comment, but she never responded to them.
And when Sowetan contacted her later, her cellphone was off.
