A MPUMALANGA man who was wanted for a series of rapes, robberies and burglaries shot and killed himself on Saturday morning.

The 24-year-old Sibusiso Nkosi of Elukwatini, near Badplaas, allegedly shot himself in the mouth after realising the police were about to arrest him.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the police had been searching for Nkosi "since Friday night but we did not find him".

"On Saturday morning he was seen walking in the street," Khoabane said. "When he saw the police vehicle he ran to a nearby house.

"When he realised he was cornered he came out of the house, produced a 9mm pistol and shot himself in full view of the officers.

"When the cops came closer they found him dead and bleeding profusely from the mouth."

Khoabane said Nkosi was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in Nhlazatje, next to Elukwatini, on Friday night.

It is alleged that he went to the girl's home, where he produced his firearm and demanded money from the girl's mother.

When the woman told Nkosi she did not have any money he ordered the young girl to accompany him to her uncle's place to search for cash.

The teenager told police investigators that when they reached a dark place her assailant dragged her into the nearby undergrowth, undressed her and raped her repeatedly.

He allegedly released her after several hours and she went home to tell her mother about her rape ordeal.

Her mother accompanied her to the local police station to lay a charge.

"On checking his criminal record we found that he was wanted for many different cases," Khoabane said.

The police said an inquest case was opened at Elukwatini police station.
