Nick Durandt's soldiers Malcolm Klassen and Jeffrey Mathebula accomplished their mission against their Mexican opponents, Manuel Medina and Julio Zarate at the Carousel Casino last Friday night.

Klassen flattened Medina in less than two minutes of their 12-round bout, sending the 37-year-old Mexican boxing legend into retirement.

He earned the number one spot in the IBF junior lightweight ranks. He will challenge the winner between IBF champ Cassius Baloyi and Javier Alvarez. That fight will take place here on September 13.

Klassen improved his knockout ratio to 14 from 24 victories, four defeats and two draws. It was his first fight under esteemed mentor Nick Durandt.

Medina's 16th defeat in an illustrious career was his last. He announced after the fight that "it is over - done with".

Mathebula punished "La Sombra" throughout their 12 rounder, registering a lopsided points decision. Two judges scored the fight 117-109 and the third 118-109.

Mathebula, who improved to 21 wins, will challenge IBF king Steve Molitor next year. The "Canadian Kid" retained his belt via a ninth-round stoppage of Cerefino Labarda in Canada on Friday night. That was Molitor's fifth defence.

Zukisani Kwayiba was easily brushed aside in two rounds by Columbian Ronaldo "El Indio" Barrera for the number one spot in the IBF straw weight division.

But the star of the night in this Branco Sports Production bill was Mzonke "The Rose of Khayelitsha" Fana, who looked a million dollars from the start of his 10-rounder with Victor Ma-On.

Fana went straight to work from the outset with his well executed stiff jabs disrupting the rock-solid Filipino. Heavy left and rights to the body and head were a sore sight in the second round and the punishment continued into the third.

Local referee Andrew Smale rightfully stopped the brutality two minutes and 56 second into the third round. The victory puts Fana in the mix for the IBF belt.
