A KwaZulu-Natal police officer says slain "super cop" Superintendent Zethembe Chonco was "betrayed by insiders".
Chonco was ambushed on Wednesday while escorting prisoners to KwaDukuza magistrate's court.
His colleagues allege Chonco was "sold out by someone within the police".
Chonco had been deployed to serve as the leader of various task teams in the province, mostly dealing with taxi-related violence. He had arrested a number of taxi owners and hitmen.
Chonco had also arrested fellow police officers involved in corrupt relationships with the taxi bosses.
"Chonco had played a pivotal role in dealing with taxi violence in Kranskop, KwaMaphumulo and KwaDukuza.
"One corrupt officer was also arrested. He was also investigating the theft of stolen firearms from Kranskop police station," the source said.
He questioned how the attackers had known the route Chonco would take to court.
"How can the attackers know the time that Chonco will take criminals to court if they were not informed by people he worked with?" the source asked.
"Someone within our ranks had informed the attackers."
Meanwhile, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union yesterday appealed to the government to give police a "legal directive to shoot to kill criminals".
Popcru spokesman Benzi ka-Soko said they could not remain silent while policemen were being killed by gun-crazy criminals.
