South Africa has recognised, acknowledged and rewarded nation builders who work in the early childhood and development sector for their passion, compassion, dedication and selflessness.

More than 80 practitioners, managers and representatives of home and community-based ECD sites and ECD resources and training organisations were given certificates of recognition at the annual Absa and Sowetan Early Childhood Development Awards function in Pretoria last night.

Department of Education director-general Duncan Hindle gave the keynote address.

He also officiated in the awards ceremony together with representatives from Sowetan, Absa, SABC Education, the Office of the Rights of the Child in the Presidency and the South African Congress for ECD.

They gave trophies and cash prizes to:

l Best Home-based Centres of the Year: Legae La Bana Crèche in North West; Emfundweni Early Childhood Development in Mpumalanga; and Doempie Playgroup of Eastern Cape;

l Community-based Centres of the Year: Joint winners - Inkanyiso Crèche in KwaZulu-Natal and IK Makuse Early Learning Centre in Mpumalanga; first runner-up - Thabong Crèche in Gauteng; and second runner-up - Ishraaq Educare Centre in Western Cape;

l Resource and Training Organisations of the Year: Keletsong Community Training and Resource Centre in North West; Early Learning Foundation Montessori Teacher Training in Western Cape; and Centre for Social Development in Eastern Cape; and

l Practitioners of the Year: Nozipho Mbeka Sijaji of Western Cape; Refilwe Maponya of Limpopo; and Paulinah Twala of Gauteng.
