Matsui will have fans drooling
Keiko Matsui will bask in the spotlight today when she kick-starts the Joy of Jazz Festival.
The Japanese pianist is a regular performer in Mzansi and she has many local fans. She will perform with a predominantly South African band, some of whose members have collaborated with her on her latest album, Moyo, which was released last year.
In 2006, on a private visit to this country, Matsui told Sowetan that the album was inspired by South Africa. She featured South African musicians on the album, including Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa, who gave her latest offering that distinctly South African flavour.
When she was selected to open the prestigious annual jazz feast, her South African fans were thrilled. Over the years, Matsui, who is based in the US, has proven her worth as a performer whose shows never fail to mesmerise audiences in this part of the world.
The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, which is expected to attract hordes of jazz lovers, will start today in Jozi's Newtown and will end on Saturday.
