Education is the key to achieving many things - and losing weight is no exception.

So says Paula Galvao, weight loss expert and founder of the Eden Life weight loss clinic. She says many women battle to lose weight because they often do not take the time to educate themselves about how their body works and why it holds on to extra weight.

Tips on how to achieve long-term results:

l Eat lots of vegetables. They help you lose weight. Leptin levels are increased when consuming a diet rich in plant-based foods.

l Choose low-fat foods over fat-free foods. They boost leptin levels, helping it to attach to cells and improve fat burning.

l Never skip meals. When you do this the stomach releases ghrelin - the hormone responsible for triggering a voracious appetite.

l Sleep enough. Sleep deprivation causes an increase in cortisol production, which results in water retention, a bigger appetite and decreased ability to lose weight.

l Diet with dairy. Evidence shows that people who consume low-fat dairy products get direct benefits from the additional dietary calcium.
