Gauteng will honour its top women achievers in various business sectors today.

The 17 finalists in six sectors were announced on Monday at Maponya Mall in Soweto.

The province's head of the department of economic development, Sibusiso Xaba, said yesterday: "The women who we are honouring through these awards are role models in their communities and among their peers.

"Their achievements serve as an invaluable source of inspiration to other women in business."

The different sectors are: women in film, women in finance, women in infrastructure development, women in services and manufacturing, women in tourism and hospitality and women in trade.

Ceciwa Khonje, a finalist in the trade sector, previously worked as a diplomat for the South African Diplomatic Corps before retiring and starting her own business in jewellery making.

"It started off as a hobby, then I got carried away. (But) it has been very exciting to be able to follow my imagination. No one tells me what to do," said a confident Khonje.

She said she had just completed a special collection for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

"One is a map of South Africa with a soccer ball on top. It comes as cuff links and a unisex pendant. Another is the figures 2010 and a vuvuzela on it," said Khonje.

Khonje's women's gold, silver, diamonds and ostrich leather jewellery is handmade and she outsources the manufacturing to various jewellery makers.

Numerous publications in Europe, the UK, US and some Asian countries have featured her distinctly African jewellery. Khonje and the other finalists will know tomorrow whether they have won in their respective sectors.
