Mama Angel, which is an outreach programme of the Sowetan, has helped many people around the country wherever the newspaper has a footprint.
Mama Angel has responded to requests from Mpumalanga, North West, Free State, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town, Eastern Cape and of course here in Gauteng.
"Sowetan is proud to say that we have made an enormous difference in people's lives," said Lindi Obose, the coordinator of the project.
"We take our role in the community in which we operate seriously and support many social-responsibility projects in those areas.
"Mama Angel receives many requests for support from all over South Africa. It is always difficult to choose which projects to support.
"Through a dedicated department, we assess each project in terms of scope and the number of beneficiaries it will help, bearing in mind that all requests are driven by the needs of community members," Obose said.
Mama Angel supports youth projects, education and welfare.
She said: "Our budget is divided among our various focus areas, the largest of which is education. Applications are screened according to our general criteria and, secondly, according to our focus areas.
"Thirdly, we weigh the request according to the available budget."
Mama Angel has supported child welfare and organisations that help the elderly and the disabled.
The Sowetan has purchased equipment and other resources for needy and deserving children.
It helps disadvantaged groups in sectors such as health, OVC (Orphaned and Vulnerable Children), youth development, food security and job creation.
The newspaper has bought school uniforms, school shoes, baby clothes, groceries for soup kitchens and school lunches.
"We have also responded to requests from as far as Swaziland where an HIV-Aids NGO asked for a netball kit. They wanted to introduce sports in their area so that the orphans do not sink into depression," Obose said.

"Partnering means that the help is doubled and enables the NGO and its target group to benefit and grow," Obose said.
