Some of the best female athletes in the country will still participate in the Spar 10km women's race in Tshwane this Saturday, despite having to race in Stellenbosch in the morning.

The yearly Spar women's race takes place at LC de Villiers stadium in Tshwane, while Athletics South Africa also has the South African championships that morning.

Poppy Mlambo, Annerien van Schalkwyk, Catherine Nkosi and Zintle Xiniwa are some of the athletes who will hop into a plane immediately after the Stellenbosch race, to make the 2.30pm start of the Tshwane race.

Gloria Baeba, who came seventh in last year's race, is unfazed by the day's programme.

"No, I have never done anything like this before and it should be interesting. I had a really poor race last year, and am hoping to improve this year. Flu affected the way I ran, but I'm going for 34 minutes this time around," Baeba said.

The Stellenbosch race, which organisers say has attracted 12000 confirmed entries, kicks off at 8am. Veteran athlete Sonja Laxton, who turns 60 this month, will also be running in her 60th race on Saturday.
