A Limpopo granny shed tears of joy when MEC for local government and housing Maite Nkoana-Mashabane handed over the title deed of her house to her.
Martha Magadzi, 72, is one of 3328 residents of NkowaNkowa and Lenyenye, in the Mopani municipality, whose bond repayments have been scrapped. She had been paying R780 a month towards her bond since 1979.
Most of the people had signed 99-year lease agreements with the former apartheid government, which did not guarantee them ownership of the houses.
But all that changed on Tuesday when Nkoana-Mashabane, also known as the "MEC of Shelter", handed over the title deeds.
"All hail the MEC for Shelter for untying the chains around our necks," Magadzi said.
Addressing more than 3000 people at NkowaNkowa Stadium, Nkoana-Mashabane said the event bestowed dignity on the people who were robbed of their dignity by the previous government . by giving them endless 99-year leases."
