The suspension of the R45million road upgrade between Lefiso and Marapyane has exposed the Roads and Transport Department's failure to cooperate, the DA says.

Work on the Lefiso-Marapyane road came to a halt in May after the Labour Department raised concerns about workers' safety.

But Roads insisted it was addressing compliance issues raised by the Labour Department.

DA spokesman Clive Hatch yesterday slammed the Roads Department after the Labour Department stopped work because of safety concerns.

"Before the Schoemansdal strike in February we raised questions about all aspects of safety as specified in the contracts for the building and upgrading of major roads in the province," Hatch said.

He said the department had failed to provide information on service providers who had been awarded the contracts.

Roads and Transport Department spokesman Dumisane Malamule said the upgrading of major roads would resume soon.
