Condolences continued to pour in from various quarters, including the government and political organisations, for late secretary of defence January Masilela.

Frank Chikane, director-general in the Presidency, also conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the crime prevention and security clusters to Masilela's family.

Masilela died in a horrific car accident on Sunday morning.

Masilela, former MEC for local government in Mpumalanga for five years, joined the Department of Defence in 1999 as secretary for defence, a position he held until his untimely death.

Chikane said Masilela left a legacy of hard work and sound ethics and would be sorely missed.

The SACP yesterday also paid tribute to Masilela, saying he dedicated his life to fighting injustice and bettering the lives of the people of our country.

Masilela was the party's provincial secretary and later deputy chairman until his death.

"He was indeed a humble servant of the people," the party said in a statement yesterday "The SACP dips its red banner to this hero of our struggle." - Eric Naki
