The South African Students Congress (Sasco) has called for a speedy conclusion of the financial and governance probe against Mangosuthu University of Technology vice-chancellor Aaron "Mseshi" Ndlovu.
Ndlovu was sent on compulsory leave on Friday to allow independent investigators to conduct the probe.
Sasco said if this was not speedily concluded it could destabilise the functioning of the institution.
The probe was ordered by university council chairman and eThekwini mayor Obed Mlaba.
Sasco general secretary Magasela Mzobe said yesterday that though they support any move to investigate maladministration of public funds in the institution, they were "flabbergasted at the manner in which the issue had been flagged in the media".
"This might create the impression that the accused is guilty before even presenting his case," Mzobe said.
"We call on the university to speedily conclude the investigation so that the uncertainty about the future of the head of the university can be cleared."
Mzobe said they suspected that the "forced" leave and investigation of Ndlovu was being carried out to appease "IFP-aligned hooligans whose hatred of Ndlovu stinks".
Mzobe said the institution cannot afford further bad publicity after the demonstrations by the South African Democratic Students Movement (Sadesmo), which led to the closure of the institution early this year.
Sadesmo is an IFP-aligned student body that at present controls the student representative council.
