SA hosts karate cup

Shin Kyokushinkai Karate Organisation will be hosting the African World Cup tournament at Medunsa sports complex in GaRankuwa on Saturday.

The tournament will be used to select an African squad that will take part in the World Karate Organisation tournament at St Petersburg in Russia in June next year.

Shihan Isaac "The African Tiger" Mashinini, president of the African World Karate Organisation, said they will be selecting an eight-member squad consisting of six men and two women.

Representatives from eight countries are expected to descend on Tshwane - Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkino Faso, Mozambique, Swaziland, Mauritius, Madagascar and Lesotho.

Mashinini said they hope to select a stronger squad than the one that took part in the same tournament in Japan in 2005.

Sensei Edward Matjila, sempais Samuel Rampai, Simphiwe Zwane and Mbongeni Sihlongonyane are local combatants who are fancied to make it into the final squad.
