In an unusual turn of events, National Prosecuting Authority staff protested outside the Johannesburg high court yesterday over salary increases.

The quiet storm had been brewing since last year.

The protest was a result of Minister of Justice Brigitte Mabandla's failure to raise their salaries by a promised 10,5 percent, or to implement the occupational-specific dispensation (OSD), under which legal professionals should receive pay increases.

Protesters, holding placards, sang and danced in the court's corridors during lunch time to show their anger.

Some of the placards read: "Is there load-shedding in the NPA," "No OSD equals no overtime, no sacrifice no devotion."

However, all the disgruntled prosecutors approached by Sowetan for comments refused to speak, citing fear of victimisation.

"We are sacrificing a lot but there are no rewards," said one of them.

He said they deserved the 10,5 percent raise they were promised.

NPA spokesman Tlali Tlali said: "Their concerns are not unfounded. These are bread and butter issues, hence we are giving the matter a priority."

He said prosecution was not disturbed because the protest was done during lunch time.

"However, it is undesirable for the salary increase issue to go on unresolved," he said.
