A mutilated body of a woman with a rope around her neck has been discovered in Durban's Hillcrest area.

Police spokesman Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen said the body was found yesterday morning by a pedestrian in the bushes of an informal settlement known as Ngilosi.

Initial investigations revealed that the woman, whose identity is unknown at this stage, was murdered shortly after midnight.

She was believed to have been about 29 years old.

The woman's private parts had been mutilated, while her stomach had been cut open and some of her entrails had been removed.

Veldhuizen said a postmortem would determine whether strangulation was the cause of death. - Sapa
